Our verdict

Revive Adserver (formerly OpenX Source) is the lowest-cost option on our list. The free download gives you full control of your data and setup, but you are responsible for installing it, keeping it secure and scaling it, and help comes from the community. The Hosted edition removes the server work for a small monthly fee. Format coverage is basic: display, text, rich media and simple video.
